With schools facing increased costs from inflation and a growing educator shortage, it is imperative these federal resources are not taken away in future negotiations on spending caps. Indeed, we urge the president not only to defend these investments in Pre-K–12 programs, but to increase funding to, in his own words, “finish the job.”

Our nation's young people are facing an unprecedented mental health crisis. AFSA convention delegates in July passed a resolution stating that the American Federation of School Administrators reaffirms its support for the integration of social-emotional learning (SEL) concepts into and use of SEL programs in conjunction with pre-K–12 education. AFSA had long advocated for Congress and the administration to invest in these programs.

I have only been on the job as president of this great organization a few days and several issues are breaking already, including the U.S. Senate releasing its 2023 budget draft for education. We will provide more information on this draft once our team has done a detailed analysis.
